La Liga is the professional football league, top division in the Spanish football league system. 20 football clubs take part in La Liga, the teams that took the last three lines in the table are eliminated in the next division of the level - Segunda, while the three best Segunda teams get the right to play in La Liga.

La Liga is considered one of the strongest leagues in the world, in the UEFA coefficient table this tournament is in second place, only the English Premier League is higher (as of 2021).

Real Madrid and Barcelona are the most successful clubs in the Spanish league - as of 2020 they have won 60 titles for two: 34 titles won by Real Madrid and 26 times by Barcelona. Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona have made the Golden Double five times (they won the championship and the Spanish Cup). Barcelona are the only Spanish club to have achieved two Golden Hat-tricks and added a victory in the UEFA Champions League to the title of champion and winner of the Spanish Cup. In the Spanish championship, the record for points scored belongs to Real Madrid and Barcelona. In the 2011/12 season, the Royal Club scored a record 100 points, and a year later the Catalans repeated the achievement.
