The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has been organizing this tournament since 1898.
This tournament was modeled after the English FA Cup. It includes teams from the top four tiers of Dutch league football (Eredivisie, Eerste Divisie, Tweede Divisie and Derde Divisie), as well as the 24 semifinalists (or replacements) from the six KNVB District Cups.
The final match is traditionally played at the Feyenoord Stadium.
The winner of the Dutch Cup earns the right to compete for the Dutch Supercup, the opening match of next season. Up until 1998, the cup winner qualified for the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, but with the elimination of that tournament, the winner is now promoted to the UEFA Europa League.
When the winning team finishes in the top two of the Eredivisie and thus gains entry to the UEFA Champions League, the berth will be redistributed to that season's Eredivisie. In 1998, both KNVB Cup finalists Ajax and PSV qualified for the Champions League, so a third-place play-off was played between losing semi-finalists Heerenveen and Twente to determine who would win the cup winners.
