In July 2013, the Scottish Premiership was established after the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League merged to form the SPFL.
The SPFL has 12 teams, each playing 38 matches per year. Since its creation in 2013–14, the Scottish Premiership has featured 16 clubs.
League champions are determined by the club with the most points at the end of each season. For teams with equal points, goal difference, goals scored, and head-to-head results, a play-off game will be played at a neutral venue.
A play-off will only be held when the teams' positions affect the outcome of the title, European qualification, relegation, or second stage group allocation.
These European places are then allocated to Scottish Premiership positions by the Scottish Football Association. Scottish Cup winners qualify for Europa League.
If the winners of that competition have already qualified, then the fifth placed team also enters the Europa Conference League second qualifying round, while third placed teams (unless they are themselves cup winners) are promoted to the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
During the Championship play-offs, the Premiership club in eleventh place plays the championship play-off winners over two legs, and the winner earns the right to play in the Scottish Premiership the following season.
Two Premiership teams will be relegated each year, while two will be promoted.
