About Romanian Liga I

Liga I is a Romanian professional league for men's association football clubs. It is the highest football competition in the country and is contested by 16 clubs that participate in a promotion and relegation system with the Liga II.

The teams each play 30 matches in the regular season before participating in the championship or relegation play-offs, depending on their position in the regular table.

Liga I was founded in 1909 and began play for the 1909-10 season. LPF, or Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal, is the organization that administers it. As of the 2006-07 season, the competition was known as Divizia A, but the name had to be changed after someone else registered that trademark.

To date, the most successful club is FCSB with 26 titles, followed by long-time city rivals Dinamo București with 18 trophies. Of the remaining 21 clubs to have won the competition, eight have won it at least three times - CFR Cluj, Venus București, Chinezul Timișoara, UTA Arad, Ripensia Timișoara, Universitatea Craiova, Petrolul Ploiești and Rapid București.

As of 2020, Liga I will have 16 teams. After playing 30 games twice against every other team, each team will be ranked by total points and split according to its position for either the championship play-offs or relegation play-offs.

At this stage, points are halved and criteria such as goal difference, goals scored, etc. are removed completely. The six clubs participating in the championship play-offs play ten matches, while the remaining ten play each other only once in the relegation play-offs, resulting in nine matches.

The winners of the championship play-offs will also be crowned the winners of Liga I for the season. The 9th and 10th placed teams in the play-outs are relegated directly to the Liga II, while the 7th and 8th placed teams play a return match against the 3rd and 4th placed teams in the second division table. In addition, the 1st and 2nd teams from the play-off phase will play a one leg match against each other and the winner will face the last team to finish the play-off phase in a European place. The winner of this one-legged match will play in the UEFA Europa Conference League next season.
