There are professional foreign players as well as local players in the league. Since Macau lacks football fields, most matches are played at the Estádio Campo Desportivo.
This league is independent of the mainland Chinese football league system, as it is in Hong Kong. Each calendar year, the league generally runs between January and July.
Prior to the start of the competition in 2014, G.D. Lam Pak, Lam Ieng, and Kuan Tai all forfeited from the First Division. Both Lam Pak and Lam Ieng withdrew due to lack of sponsorship, and Kuan Tai was unable to pay some of its players due to budgetary issues.
As a result of three sudden vacancies, the Macau Football Association clarified that the two clubs that were relegated in 2013, Kei Lun and MFA Development, would remain in the league, and a third team would be selected from the Second Division.
Despite careful consideration, the Macau Football Association decided not to pick a Second Division team, since it was deemed not competitive enough for the First Division.
