About Egyptian Premier League

The Egyptian Premier League is a professional football league in Egypt and the highest level of the Egyptian football league system.

The league consists of 18 teams and operates on a promotion and relegation system with the Egyptian second division.

The seasons usually last from August to May.

Unlike most other leagues, all matches are played throughout the week.

The league was founded in 1948, uniting the local leagues that existed until then. 70 clubs have participated in the league since its inception.

Al Ahly has won the title 42 times, more than any other club.

Their nearest rival, Zamalek, has won the league 14 times.

Only five other clubs have won the league; these clubs are Ghazl El Mahalla, Ismaily, Al Mokawloon Al Arab, Olympic Club and Tersana.

The Egyptian Premier League consists of 18 clubs. The season lasts from August to May.

During the season, each club plays the others twice, once in their own stadium and once in the stadium of their opponents.

There are 34 matches in total. Teams are ranked by total points, then by direct comparison between teams, then by goal difference and then by goals scored.

At the end of each season, the club with the most points becomes the champion. In the event of a tie, the winner is decided by the direct comparison between the two teams, then by goal difference and finally by the goals scored.

At the end of the season, the three lowest-placed teams are relegated to the second Egyptian league. The second Egyptian league consists of three groups; the winner of each group is promoted.

This system has been in place since 2015.

Since the inception of the Egyptian Premier League in 1948-49 up to and including the 2020-21 season, a total of 70 clubs have played in the league.

But only two clubs have been members of the Egyptian Premier League in every season since its inception.

These are Al Ahly and Zamalek, while Al-Ittihad and Al Masry have only been absent in two seasons since the league's inception.
