About Girabola

The first football championship of Angola took place in 1965, ten years before Angola gained independence. The first champion of the country was Atlético de Luanda, now known as Atlético Sport Aviação. The Aviators then built on their success by winning the next three championships.

From 1969 to 1971, Independente became the best club in the country. From 1972 to 1974, three different clubs became national champions, and in the year of independence, the championship was canceled. The next championship of Angola - the first championship of independent Angola - took place in 1979, and one of the giants of Angolan football, Primeiro de Agosto from Luanda, became its winner.

In total, the "August" club has nine titles of the Champion of Angola. The rest of the giants that form the so-called "big three" clubs in Angola include the country's capital record holder in the number of titles won (15) Petro Atlético de Luanda and Atlético Sport Aviação, who, after Angola gained independence, added three more championship titles to his treasury.

In 30 draws of Girabola, six clubs were the champions of the country. In addition to the above-mentioned "titans", which have a total of 26 titles, Inter de Luanda managed to become champions of the country once, which added the 27th league title to the treasury of the capital's clubs, Sagrada Esperança from Dundo, and Girabola's twice "gold" went to Primeiro de Maio from Benguela

Format

The championship traditionally runs from February/March to October/November. The number of participants until 2000 has constantly varied, from 2000 to the present day the number of participants is 14 teams. All clubs play 26 matches per season, meeting each team twice.

A win is worth three points, a draw is worth one point. The champion of the country and the silver medalist receive tickets to the CAF Champions League, while the team that took third place and the winner of the Angola Cup - to the CAF Confederation Cup. The three worst teams at the end of the season are automatically sent to Segundona.
