It was created in 1962, when Algeria became an independent nation, and has been played under a variety of formats ever since.
Prior to the start of the 2010 season, the league's name was changed to the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 2 to reflect its professionalization.
In the 2020-21 season, the level returned to its amateur format and was played between 36 teams in three groups of 12 teams, with a play-off between the champions of each group.
The winners and runners-up of the play-offs were promoted to the Ligue Professionnelle 1 and the bottom four teams relegated to the Inter-Régions Division.
A new format was adopted for the 2021-22 season, with 32 teams divided into two groups of 16 teams each.
Each group's champion will be promoted to the Ligue Professionnelle 1 and the bottom four teams will be relegated to the Inter-Régions Division.
