About COSAFA Cup

The COSAFA Cup or COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup is an annual tournament for South African teams organized by the Council of South African Football Association (COSAFA) and was opened after the ban against South Africa and the African Cup of Nations had been staged there in 1996.

Teams from Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe have previously participated in the tournament.

Additionally, seven non-COSAFA members participated: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Senegal. Six titles have been won by Zimbabwe and Zambia, followed by five by South Africa.

As the competition grew, it turned into a series of mini-tournaments. The COSAFA Senior Challenge 2010 was to be the 14th edition of the tournament involving South African teams.

A decision was made in July 2010 to hold the competition in Angola. The 2010 edition of the competition was canceled in October 2010. COSAFA stated that the Angolan authorities had not given sufficient guarantees to hold the tournament.
