About African Nations Championship

The African Nations Championship is a football tournament biennial national level organized by the Confederation of African Football and announced for the first time on September 11, 2007. Participating countries must include players playing in their home leagues.

The first tournament held in Ivory Coast in 2009 was won by the Democratic Republic of Congo, which, along with Morocco, is the only country to have won the tournament twice, with Tunisia and Libya winning one title each.

At first, the tournament was organized with eight teams, but then quickly expanded to 16 teams from the second edition.

Starting from the 2014 edition, all matches in the tournament will be counted towards the calculation of the FIFA World Rankings, making its development a necessity.

The entire tournament is considered friendly by FIFA because of the restriction to only allow players from local leagues to participate. The tournament takes place every two years, alternating with the Cup of African Nations.

The 16 teams participating in the final will be divided into four groups of four teams each. As a result of the system of all against all, they face each other once within each group.

For each match, three points are awarded to the team that wins, one point to each team in case of a tie, and none for the team that loses. Teams in the top two places of each group advance to the next round.

From round 16 to the final, all stages are included in the second round. A direct elimination system determines the two semifinalists. Winners of the semifinals play the final match, and the losers of the semifinals play for third and fourth place.

In the event of a tie after 90 minutes of play, extra time will be played in two stages of 15 minutes each. If the score is still tied after extra time, the winner will be decided by penalty shootout.
