About UEFA Conference League

The UEFA Europa Conference League is an annual competition of football clubs that are part of UEFA. Clubs qualify for this League based on their performance in domestic leagues and cup competitions. It is the third tier of European club football after the Champions League and Europa League.

In the early stages, the tournament was called the Europa League 2, but in September 2019, UEFA named the third most important European club tournament the Conference League.

The competition has been running since the 2021/2022 season and this tournament actually serves as the lower tier of the UEFA Europa League, the group stage of which has been reduced to 32 teams. The Conference League primarily involves teams from the lowest-ranked UEFA member associations.

Format

The format of the Conference League will not differ from the Champions League and the Europa League (but unlike the Champions League and the Europa League, all participants in the group stage will be determined by the results of the qualifying stages).

32 teams will play in each tournament, which will increase the minimum guaranteed representation in the three tournaments from 26 to 34 associations. The main draw of the tournament will consist of a group stage (8 groups of 4 clubs) and a playoff - a preliminary round (with the participation of teams that took second place in the group stage of the Conference League and third place in the group stage of the Europa League), 1/8, 1 /4, 1/2 finals and final.

The tournament will feature a total of 141 matches over 15 match weeks on Thursdays, similar to the Europa League, which will have its group stage teams reduced from 48 to 32. The Conference League final will be played on Wednesday in the same week as other European club competition finals : Europa League final - on Thursday, Champions League - on Saturday. The winner of the Conference League will qualify for the Europa League next season.
