The winner advances to the Austrian Bundesliga, while the 14th to 16th placed teams are relegated to the Austrian Regionalliga.
16 clubs play in the 2. Liga. The championship is divided into an autumn and spring season.
This means that every team plays every other team twice over the course of a season.
A championship year thus extends to 30 rounds with eight games each.
