About Bulgarian First League

The First Professional Football League, also known as the Bulgarian First League or Parva Liga, is a professional association football league, located at the top of the Bulgarian football league system.

In 1924, the Bulgarian State Football Championship was established, and since 1948, the A Group has played in a league format.

The league is contested by 16 teams and operates on a promotion-relegation system with the Second Professional Football League.

The season's winner is determined according to how many points a team has collected throughout the season, just as it is in any other European League.

Based on the league's European coefficient, champions of the First League are eligible to participate in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. In addition, two UEFA Europa League spots are awarded to the second-place team and the winner of the European playoffs.

Considering the Bulgarian Cup holder finished among the top three teams at the end of the season, a fourth spot may be awarded to the fourth placed team in the final league ranking.

Since the Bulgarian top-tier was established, 74 clubs have participated. Eleven different Bulgarian teams have won championships since 1948.

CSKA Sofia, Levski Sofia, and Ludogorets Razgrad are the three most successful clubs.
