Irish Premier Division
12 clubs take part in the tournament, the season runs from March to October, each team plays 33 matches. Most games take place on Fridays, some on Saturday and Sunday.
The championship was created in 1985 when the decision was made to split the Irish League into two divisions: the Premier Division and the First Division.
Competition format
Until recently, 12 clubs played in the Premier Division, playing 33 matches per season, playing with each opponent once or twice - on their own field and once or twice - on the opponent's field. Starting in 2018, the Premier Division was reduced to 10 teams, but the number of matches increased to 36. Now the teams meet 4 times per season, 2 meetings at home and 2 away. For a victory in a match, the team receives three points, for a draw - one point, in case of defeat, the team does not receive points. The champion is determined by the number of points per season, if two or more teams are equal, by the difference in goals, and if they are equal, by the number of goals scored. In the event that the teams have the same number of points, goals and goal difference, a match is scheduled on a neutral field. The team with the lowest points at the end of the season is eliminated in the First Division, and the second-to-last team plays in the two-league playoffs with the team that took the second place in the First Division.
Trophy
The Irish Premier League trophy premiered on 31 October 2007. Its height is 91 centimeters, the circumference is 83 centimeters. The cup is made of sterling, as well as other metals, including copper. On November 2, 2007, Drogheda United became the first club to receive the new trophy.
